I’m writing this on the eve of our summer vacation shutdown, typing with tired fingers and a mushed brain.

Well, it’s been quite a year, to say the least. Covid-19 has been challenge on so many levels (personal-wise, business-wise, society-wise), and the DV Shop, luckily, has done okay. We are very grateful to our customers who have remained loyal during these times, and are very fortunate to be in a business that remained strong in the pandemic. We were able to pivot to curb-side very easily, so for all the challenges that arose and are in fact still present, we were able to ride the Covid roller-coaster and come out fine. So far so good. Our hearts go out to the businesses, and the people who work there, that were not able to ride that roller coaster so easily. We realize how lucky we are, and are very grateful for that luck.

So how do we sum up 20 years? To paraphrase Elton John, we’re still standing. Despite the never-ending challenges that came our way (and there were many), we somehow managed to weave, duck and pivot from all the punches thrown; scrape the cash together to keep fighting for another day (and sometimes that cash was mighty low); and through sheer perseverance and determination (and maybe some stubbornness) we kept the doors open in the early days when we really had no right to be in business. And we’re still here 20 years later, stronger than ever.

Single word on how I’m feeling? Exhausted. I’m working more 7 day weeks than 6, (no 5 day work weeks for DV Dude); 70 hours a week, for 20 years, and it starts to take a toll. Yes, the first world problems of running a successful business. So I’m happily exhausted! Off for a short vacation, to re-charge the batteries, and to prepare for whatever comes next.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1556786546252365097.post-57307966942165574982020-10-31T09:25:00.004-04:002020-10-31T09:25:59.069-04:00It's John Candy Day in Toronto!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1556786546252365097.post-77539913692586152562020-07-29T09:56:00.001-04:002020-07-29T09:56:22.343-04:00Sony a7S III Camera Launch: The Way Forward

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1556786546252365097.post-4237212784368240102020-06-19T09:59:00.000-04:002020-06-19T11:53:30.571-04:00DV Shop COVID-19 Updates

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Today, The DV Shop is celebrating our 18th Anniversary. And what a wild and amazing 18 years it as been.

When we opened on May 7th, 2001 it was an exciting time for digital video. Final Cut Pro 2 had just come out, Firewire 400 was revolutionizing everything, and DVD authoring was just becoming available to the masses. The best Apple computer you could get was a G4 733 MHz (Mhz not GHz) with a 64MB (yes MB) video card.

Our mandate when we opened was to specialize in this newish thing called MiniDV. To evangelize it, to offer products catering to it, and to promote it. We thought it was the future, and Canada could use a store focused on it.

We had no money when we opened the store. We were a couple levels below shoe-string. We got through the first year by racking up massive credit card debt. We were the new kid on the block, competing against some very established companies - Precision Camera, Extra Bytes, Solutions in Computing, Merkle Camera, MacWarehouse… none of whom are in business today. We were the little scrappy underdog, with the dingy store with the terrible carpet. And we almost pulled the plug and closed down twice in our first year. But we kept going.

How have things changed in the industry since 2001? Blackmagic Design, the industry behemoth, hadn't even come out with their first capture card yet. That would be in 2002 with their Decklink card. HiDef was being talked about, and it was available on the most expensive cameras, but it was more of a promising future concept than a practical reality. The phrase "4K" hadn't even been invented yet. There were no LED lights, Facebook, or RED cameras. The elusive "film look", the holy grail of video shooting, that was impossible to do in 2001? Now you can do it on a $799 Canon Rebel.

And if you came into our store, claiming you were from the future, and said in 2019 you will shoot high quality video on your cell phone that you can stream in real time to the internet, and that there will be these miniature helicopters with cameras attached called Drones that can shoot 4K video and cost under $2000, we would have laughed our heads off and called the cops, because obviously these things would not be doable for so little money in such a short amount of time. Maybe in 2040 or 2050, but not 2019.

Just to give some perspective on how much things have changed in 18 years, here's some comparative pricing.

Hard Drives

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In 2001, the biggest hard drive you could get was 75GB, and a LaCie Firewire 75GB cost over $500.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In 2006, the biggest external hard drive was 600GB, and the LaCie Firewire 600GB cost $529.
In 2019, the LaCie USB3 10TB costs $419.

Memory Cards

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In 2006, the SanDisk Ultra 8GB Compact Flash card cost $1199.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In 2019, an 8GB SD card costs $9.

DVD Burners

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In 2001, the internal Pioneer A03 DVD Burner cost $1499.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In 2019, an internal BluRay Burner sets you back $79.

So with all these thoughts and looking back makes us wonder - what are we going to be saying in 2029 about 2019?

Finally, we would like to thank all our loyal customers for shopping with us year after year, and riding the digital wave with us.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This morning, with great shock and sadness, we learned of Anthony Bourdain's death by suicide at the age of 61.

His CNN TV show "Parts Unknown" offered something special you'd never expect from a travel/cooking show - a profound exploration of regions and cultures, that made you part of his adventure and taught you something new with every episode. Bourdain managed one of the hardest tricks<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> in filmmaking - he was entertaining and informative at the same time. And I use the word filmmaking intentionally, because his show was filmmaking. Bourdain assembled a terrific and talented crew. It featured top notch production values, with excellent cinematography, a flair for camera angles and compositions, editing that was magical, and a powerful use of music. The topping on the cake was the voice-over narration, written by Bourdain himself, which was often moving, insightful and poetic.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">n every sense of the word, Anthony Bourdain<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> was a true artist. Those of us who enjoyed his travels and took the journey with him to "Parts Unknown" are<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> poorer for his loss.

DV Shop is proud to announce that we are now a RED authorized dealer. Orders are in place, and inventory is in-bound.

RED revolutionized digital cinema with their RED ONE back in 2007, and in fact the owner of the DV Shop owned Serial #758 of the original RED ONE camera.

Since then, RED has continuously pushed the envelope, and improved their products.

One could argue that without RED, the acceleration of digital cinema would have been much slower. RED was to digital cinema in the 2000s what Apple was to computers in the 1980s - a paradigm shift that everyone else followed.

The above video is about director Mark Toia, and why he uses RED. It's worth the 5 minutes of your time, not only for the beautiful images, but on why of all the choices that are out there today, he uses RED. Enjoy!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1556786546252365097.post-64985158224307193932018-05-08T13:33:00.002-04:002018-05-11T09:19:59.375-04:00It's Our 17th BIrthday

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ten years ago, DV Dude ventured north of downtown Las Vegas to the Neon Boneyard and took some pretty cool photos of old, discarded neon signs. Since that time, the Neon Boneyard has grown in popularity, became the Neon Museum, added a Visitor's Center, and the obligatory Gift Shop.
Now things are so clean and so organized. And you get get Neon Museum shot glasses, t-shirts, and mugs in the Gift Shop. It seems there is a Museum Handbook/Formula that every museum around the world follows.

If you are a fan of Peak TV, then you owe a big debt of gratitude to Steven Bochco, who passed away Sunday from leukemia at the age of 74.

Bochco, along with Michael Kozoll, created the ground-breaking NBC cop show "Hill Street Blues." Hill Street was unlike anything else on TV at the time, especially cop shows. With complicated multi-episode story arcs that often did not have a happy ending; a large talented ensemble cast, with flawed characters who don't always do the right thing; handheld edgy cinematography with moody lighting and a documentary feel; and a tone that combined comedy with dark emotional drama. It premiered in January 1981 to universal critical acclaim, and sadly very low ratings. NBC surprisingly stuck with the show, and even though the ratings were never very good, and it ran for 7 seasons.

To an impressionable Grade 11 high school student living in small town Ontario, it blew my mind.

As a historical piece, you can trace modern television back to this show. So if you enjoy Breaking Bad, True Detective, Boardwalk Empire, or any of the other numerous high quality TV series that now dominate the airwaves, it all started with Hill Street Blues. The lineage goes right back to January 1981.

I read an interview with Bochco a long time ago, and in it he gave a great piece of advice. When the writer asked him the secret to his artistic success, he simply said - I want to write what I want to see, what I would want to watch. That was it.

So raise your glass to toast the life of the father of modern television - Steven Bochco.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1556786546252365097.post-11687917425436423882018-02-05T10:11:00.002-05:002018-02-05T10:11:24.034-05:00DV DUDE'S GREAT OTTAWA ADVENTURE, PART II
