NAB 2013: 8K Demos from NHK

This year's NAB theme is 4K, and there are a ton of products on display that shoot 4K, edit 4K and display 4K. But those pesky engineers at Japan's NHK are showing off once again their 8K cameras and displays.

So how does it look? Insanely sharp. The picture above is of a native 8K screen showing a live feed.

What are they calling 8K? Super Hi-Vision. Pixel size? 7680x4320. Sound system? 22.2 channel sound.

Here's the camera that is feeding that monitor. It is a single chip, 33 megapixel sensor.

NHK were also showing off a "compact" 8K camera, that is the same size as HD shoulder cams.

So while 4K is just about to go mainstream, NHK is showing us what we'll be talking about 5 years from now, once 4K becomes stale and boring.

They were handing out brochures touting the uses of 8K displays, from home theatre to schools to museums to giant billboards. But my favourite was for use in business - and I quote "Super Hi-Vision makes sure that you don't miss anything during a teleconferencing call, from words to realistic expressions. Your business partners will appear to be in the room with you making natural and effortless communication possible." NHK hopes to start broadcasting in 2020.
